Polivka International Team Awarded Contract for CSX Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Facility
Pittsburgh, Pa. – December 16, 2014 – Polivka International today announced that they have been selected as general contractor for the CSX Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal to be constructed in McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, Pa. Polivka International has partnered with longstanding Pittsburgh-based Trumbull Corporation for this project. The facility will support the transfer of long-haul freight containers between trains and trucks, enhancing the region’s connectivity to the global economy by providing shippers in western Pennsylvania with direct freight rail access.

“CSX has been a valued, trusted partner for more than 30 years, and we look forward to combining our collective experience to construct this state-of-the-art facility that will help move freight seamlessly between rail and the road,” said A. Basil Polivka, President of Polivka International.

“As a Pittsburgh-based company, we are proud to be a part of this effort and are eager to apply our local expertise to this substantial project.” said George Mezey, President of Trumbull Corporation.

Located at the site of the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie (P&LE) Railroad Yard in McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, the 65-70 acre facility represents an investment by CSX of more than $50 million. The facility’s two-year construction process is slated to begin in 2015. The general contractor selection is an important step in moving the project into the construction phase.

“CSX is committed to developing a project that meets the needs of McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, while serving CSX customers and the greater western Pennsylvania economy,” said Chris Durden, Assistant Vice President, Terminal Development for CSX Intermodal Terminals, Inc. “We are confident that working together with Trumbull and Polivka, two companies with roots in the Pittsburgh community, that we can achieve that goal.”

Over the past year, CSX has worked closely with public officials and members of the community to plan enhancements to the terminal design and surrounding area. To facilitate communication with members of the public, CSX launched a Facebook group dedicated to providing information and answering questions about the Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Facility.

“This terminal strongly compliments the concurrent development that’s happening in our downtown business district and the new 40-acre Rocks Industrial Park,” said Taris Vrcek, Executive Director, McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation. “It is exciting to see this project begin to come to fruition after considerable planning and pre-development efforts by a diverse partnership.”

“CSX’s investment in an intermodal terminal will further open the Pittsburgh region to global markets and position regional businesses for the growth and success that goes with getting goods and materials to market faster,” said Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA) President Dewitt Peart.
